A bill is currently progressing through UK Parliament to broaden the scope of the family reunification provisions and bring them in line with many other countries in Europe; the UK rules are currently one of the two most restrictive in the EU.  The proposed new rules would achieve three things:

  • To allow child refugees, and well as adults, to sponsor family members to join them
  • To expand the criteria of who qualifies as a family member for the purposes of refugee family reunion to include siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles
  • To reintroduce legal aid for family reunification claims, as navigating the process without legal help is extremely difficult

Care4Calais have joined a coalition of organisations that are campaigning together for this bill including the Refugee Council, the British Red Cross, Amnesty International and Oxfam.
