In the UK clean underwear is something we take for granted; something we expect everyone to have.
But imagine not having any, and not being able to get any, either.
That’s the reality for many of our Afghan families. Hundreds either had no time to pack, or have not been given any clothes since they arrived.
But, thanks to our amazing donors we’ve been able to buy an incredible 25,000 pieces of underwear – that’s socks, bras, pants and boxers – for men, women and children.
All last week our volunteers gave these out to people who’ve been stuck in hotels for up to a month now, with only the clothes they arrived in.
Over 15,000 Afghans were evacuated in that short window. Many literally ran for their lives, packing a suitcase didn’t matter – it was a question of just grabbing your family and hurtling to the airport.
Other people have told us how bags couldn’t get through the tightly jammed bodies, and had to be abandoned as you kept tight hold of your family’s hands.
It’s been good to help people, but we need to do much more. And we need to do it before winter sets in.
