A ‘mirror selfie’

One of the services Care4Calais offers to the refugees is hairdressing/ barbering and this requires various equipment; razors, scissors, shavers etc. This week in Brussels the usual large crowd gathered around the “hairdressing station”, some patiently, others not so patient for their turn with one of the talented barbers.
I caught the eyes of two young men standing outside the crowd and smiled and said “hello.” They asked me for a loan of one of the small mirrors I was holding and said “we haven’t seen our faces for many months.” It was very moving seeing two friends sharing a mirror together and seeing their own faces again. We called it a ‘mirror selfie’.
This made me think of the many small things we take for granted every day. The people here have nothing. In this day and age there must be more we can do to help?
