A special distribution for Orthodox Easter in Calais

Sunday was Orthodox Easter, celebrated by lots of the Eritrean refugees in Calais. This is a day of celebration, filled with food, music and dancing!
Today we visited the Eritrean camp for our weekly distribution and services. Lots of refugees are separated from their families and loved ones, so this Orthodox Easter, we wanted to make the distribution extra special. We always take the opportunity to help those we work with try to keep hold of the positive feelings which come with being able to observe the religious celebrations which are most meaningful to them.
Our volunteers spent the morning making up care packages for the refugees, filled with chocolate, coca cola, hair oils, notepads and hand sanitiser. We gave out 141 of these today and everyone loved the gifts.
One man, S, said: “We usually spend time with family on this day and have a big meal, but right now, we cannot. But you’re here, and this is a great way to celebrate.”
We also distributed hygiene packs and spent a great afternoon charging phones, organising haircuts, fixing bikes, sewing clothes and playing games!
