This man’s biggest dream is to be free

Today I helped a young man sew his shirt back together while his five-year-old daughter played nearby. The shirt had a hole in the armpit and was one of only two tops that he had left. From what I understood, it was ripped during an altercation with the French police. The past few days have been particularly brutal.
While I helped him, he talked to me about life in Morocco. He showed me lacerations on his arm from the violence he experienced back home, before he managed to escape.
When I asked him what he wants to do when he gets to the UK, his reply broke my heart. People usually answer this by talking about their line of work or about wanting to be reunited with family. But this father’s biggest dream was a bit different. He turned to me and simply said: “All I want is to be free.”
