Ali’s story

Ali’s story

Ali, 42, left Iran in 1999 and lived and worked in Sheffield for 15 years. Sadly, two years ago his mother, who still lived in Iran, passed away. Grief stricken and longing to see the only family he has left he travelled to Sweden to visit his sister.

However, following this he was not allowed to return to the UK, and was also not allowed to stay in Sweden with his sister. Unfortunately for him he is now stuck in limbo at Dunkirk.

It is heartbreaking to hear this story, and so easy to understand how it could happen; how many of us seek the comfort of family in times of grief?

It’s even more heartbreaking to hear Ali blames himself for his situation. He chastises himself over and over again for making “stupid” mistakes. I ask myself, how many of us would have done the same? Probably most of us, but we would not be punished so harshly.
