Differences melt away and humanity takes over

When we work with refugees some of them help us. They translate, help with distribution and give us invaluable information about what people need. If a day has been long and hard we might take them for a team meal as a small way to say thank you. It’s good for them and for our volunteers.
This week, after the meal, we decided to play pool in one of the bars nearby. A casual decision; more often than not people are too tired. But this small decision led to something beautiful.
Some French locals were already playing pool and while we waited our turn we got talking. They ended up playing doubles with the boys and by the end of the night we were a group of best friends – from the UK, France and several different countries in Africa.
More than any words this shows what happens if people just talk to each other. Differences melt away and humanity takes over. We really are all the same; everyone wants to relax and have fun; no one wants to be the one to miss the ball; everyone wants to make their friends laugh.
If only every town in Britain could have a night playing pool with refugees. Things could be so different.
