Eid Mubarak!

Over the last month, we have been supporting refugees observing Ramadan in Northern France. Many have been fasting each day, so we have provided packs of food they can cook to break their fast as well as packs of dates. Today they are celebrating Eid – the end of Ramadan.

To celebrate with our friends, we made up gift bags. Each bag contained Coca Cola, chocolates, a torch, playing cards, socks, tissues and a mask. We wanted them to have something small even if this year Eid celebrations would be very different to what happens at home.

One of the refugees told me that usually he would celebrate Eid for 3 days. He would see his whole family and they would come together to share food. But in Calais, he woke up to rain against his tent and felt sad. However, when we gave out the packs this afternoon, he said he felt happy because he was celebrating with his new family, the Care4Calais volunteers!

Today has really felt like a family celebration and I am so glad we were able to bring a bit of normality to the people celebrating Eid in Calais today. After we had given out the gifts, one refugee came rushing back over with some flowers he had picked for us. It was such a thoughtful and kind gift. Despite the bad weather, it’s a day full of celebration and kindness. It’s a day I will remember for a long time.
