Football matches in Calais: Gharfill’s time volunteering

‘We’ve been organising football matches for a couple of weeks. Every day there’s another one and they’re getting more and more serious. The Care4Calais team have only won 2 matches of the last 10!
In this photo, we were playing against Afghani refugees in Dunkirk. We all love playing sports and it can get so competitive. While we’re playing everyone can forget their troubles and enjoy the sport.
I’m from Paris and have been in Calais for three weeks now. In my district where I’m from, there are a lot of refugees and many of them are sleeping on the street. My mum often makes extra food and offers it to them so it felt natural for me to come and volunteer in Calais and help people who are struggling.
I imagined that volunteering here would be really chaotic but it’s been so smooth. I was astonished because everyone living in the camps here has been so easygoing and friendly – not at all how the media has been describing them.’
