Whenever I visited a hotel near me in the summer this cheeky boy was always outside playing games and running around with his siblings. But as days got chillier and wetter, I rarely ever saw him outdoors anymore. It was still warm when he arrived in the UK with his family so he didn’t have any coat to keep him snug while playing or walking to school.
That all changed today. While looking through the clothes during our distribution near the hotel he found a brand-new waterproof coat, still with tags on and in his exact size! His eyes immediately lit up. Someone had bought it a while ago but never got round to using it – unlike my 10-year-old friend, who put it on straight away.
I know it’s just a winter coat for some. But for him it’s a chance to be a normal kid again – to run around, to play football, to enjoy some sense of normality. Thanks to someone’s generous donation this sweet boy can once again enjoy the outdoors with his siblings and friends, and once he starts school he’ll be warm enough to walk to class no matter the weather.
I’m so happy that he found a coat he loved today. But there are still thousands of other refugees in Northern France and the UK who don’t have a coat to see them through this winter. Many of them are sleeping rough in the cold and rain. We really need your help to keep them warm.
