Hope Springs!

This Easter Sunday – a time to celebrate, a time of hope, renewal and new life – we want to give thanks to all the churches and other faith based groups who support Care4Calais. Your kindness and generosity, fuelled by your faith and believe in humanity, has made a big difference.
Last week we took winter coats to a group of over 150 refugees to fight the bitter chill that still pervades the air in Calais. A local volunteer from the church joined us, offering rosaries to those who wanted them. A small gesture that means so much to those who sought him out, a wearable symbol of their faith which will guide their prayers. He kisses the rosary and invites the refugees to as well, which each does fervently, alternating a kiss with bowing their forehead to it. Along with the warm coat we have just given to this young man, the combination of practical help and spiritual renewal is a powerful one to witness. Thanking us all many times over, and with a smile reaching his eyes, our friend walked away with renewed hope for life.
For people who have suffered so much, their faith is often the light they so need in the darkness of their situation. Life is so hard for them in Calais, having travelled for so long and experienced so much trauma to get there, to be faced with no safe or legal routes to their family, friends or community in the UK would break the strongest spirit. And yet, whether it be through a belief in God, Allah, other human beings, or sheer determination, we are always inspired by people’s strength to carry on and face another day.
