Meet the refugee who gives away his warm meals

We were handing out food packs to 600 people today when a soft-spoken refugee told me of the touching sacrifice he makes for the children of Calais. He said that when the kids can’t get food from the French Government’s distribution, as it sometimes runs out, the man will give up his own meal for them. He had already done so today after witnessing a 10-year-old unaccompanied boy who had missed out on the government distribution that morning.
It’s a big sacrifice to give up a warm meal for someone else, but it’s something he is willing to do for the children who are alone and scared in this hostile environment.
That is why he is so grateful for the food packs we give out, he told me. They come with enough ingredients to allow him to cook for himself and others around him. His favourite things to cook for groups of friends are big pots of chilli, tuna and tomato pasta, and kidney bean curry. With these warm shared dinners by the fire, no one has to go hungry.
