Over 200 pairs of new shoes distributed in waterlogged Calais

‘This week, we gave out more than 200 pairs of brand new walking boots and trainers at two different sites in Calais. I always look forward to these distributions, as shoes are one of the things we get asked for most often. Especially now, as many of the places where refugees sleep are muddy or completely waterlogged. Each time I go out, I have to put on my walking boots, so it was really nice to be able to offer the refugees new, waterproof boots – they have to spend the majority of their time in the waterlogged areas.
The distribution at the bigger site took place in the pouring rain, but still more than 200 people came and lined up patiently. This, more than anything, shows how much they need the shoes. We handed out plastic ponchos but still it was freezing cold and wet. I’m so glad they had something good to show for it.
Everyone we spoke to afterwards was so pleased with their new shoes, and it was great to see them being worn straight away, especially as it has been so wet over the last few weeks.’
