We couldn’t believe our eyes when our friends from SKT Welfare
arrived at our warehouse in their truck, and began unloading it.
First came a whole pallet piled high with boxes of delicious, juicy dates. We would have been pretty thrilled with that on its own, but then came another.
And… by the time they’d finished, we had 20 pallets-ful! That’s thousands of pounds worth of dates. It meant so much to us and refugees, and we were all quite choked with emotion.
As SKT know, dates are so important at this time of year because Ramadan is fast approaching, and for Muslims it’s tradition to break your fast with dates.
Dates are expensive, and refugees in Calais have no money to buy such delicacies, but this donation from SKT means that we’ll be able to give out delicious, juicy dates all through Ramadan.
We know this will mean more to people than we can out into words. Refugees tell us that Ramadan makes them think about home and the past, and about how they alone here, without their family and friends here. These dates will remind them of happier times – and they’re a sign that there are people who care for them.
The SKT gifts are really extra-extra special because as you can see they come in beautiful painted tins. These tins will be recycled and used for everything from cooking to storing personal treasures.
We’re already making plans for how we’ll put together our Ramadan packs for the festival that starts in 19 days’ time – this incredible present means these will probably be the most wonderful that we’ve ever given out. Thank you and shukran, SKT!
