The Home Affairs Select Committee

Yesterday we gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee about the current situation for refugees in France. We are glad to see this issue being given more attention by the press and the government- it’s been forgotten about for too long.
Our keys points were that
1. The numbers of people trying to get to the UK are small; the majority of refugees in Europe go to other neighbouring countries.
2. The main reasons for the ones that do head for the UK are that they have family ties here and they just want to be safe.
3. The only true solution is to create a safe and legal route. This would save lives and prevent harm to refugees, as well as putting people smugglers out of business. There have been migrants in Calais for many years now and it is clear that ever increasing security measures are not creating real change.
