This photograph shows that dignity is something you create for yourself

Look closely at this picture. I hope you see what I see. This area of an illegal settlement on waste ground in Calais is spotlessly clean.

This is the work of one man I met today. He came to ask me for something – bin bags. If you look closely you will see them tied to the trees.

One of the hardest things for the people we meet is the many indignities they suffer every day. They are ordinary people who had jobs, lives and self respect. Finding yourself sleeping rough with no legal status can be a horrible shock.

This photograph shows that dignity is something you create for yourself. No matter how hard bad people try to take it away from you it remains within you and is visible for the world to see.
