Unaccompanied Minors Update
Yesterday the authorities declared the camp had been completely cleared, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Up to 100 minors were left unregistered yesterday due to the containers, that they were meant to be placed in, being full. No solution was found, so they stopped registering them and they were told to go back to the camp. A camp that was now on fire and too dangerous to go back in to.
So last night 23 minors slept in a school while our volunteers watched over them. And we understand around 50 others slept outside the containers on the street with other volunteers. The police have asked us to bring them to the processing centre this morning. These are young and extremely vulnerable children that need our help and yesterday the authorities turned their back on them.
Further Update:
Unaccompanied minors have been lining up for hours today, waiting to be processed. The official registration centre is now closed and the containers designated to house minors are at capacity. It is unclear what the French authorities plan for their welfare and instructions keep changing.
