Volunteer Stories: Our female powered admin team

A little known secret about Care4Calais is the incredible work done by this group of fantastic women. They are our behind-the-scenes superheroes – better known as the Admin Team.

Right now, Care4Calais gets between 400 and 1000 emails a week – every week. From new volunteers to organisations like the Red Cross asking if we can help, there’s a huge range of requests to deal with every single day.

Meeting all the demands takes tons of energy, organisation and quick thinking, plus a super-detailed knowledge of everything Care4Calais does in the UK and France – which is a lot.

There are eight in the team altogether. In the picture you can see Elisha, Debbie, Laura, Nikki, Grace, Hannah, Charlotte, Kimberley and Lauren. Unbelievably, they do all this while also working full-time jobs and managing family lives and children. It really is a wonder to many of us at Care4Calais that they manage to pull this off, but they do – and all while presenting a friendly welcome to newcomers, and brilliant support to managers and volunteers.

Many reading this will remember the Admin Team being helpful, reassuring guides when they first began working with us, and I know they feel as grateful as I do.

Supporting refugees and asylum seekers who have effectively been abandoned and victimised by governments is not easy. It relies on tireless hard work by ordinary people inspired by a sense of kindness and decency, and much of that hard work is thankless graft done behind the scenes.

Nowhere is that more true than in the case of the Care4Calais Admin Team. Told you they were superheroes.
