Warmth always comes first
I wanted to share a story that always makes me laugh about the cheery man who is the face of our #Coats4Calais campaign this year. I was helping at a winter coats distribution in Brussels one day when I first met him.
He came up to me and was adamant that he wanted a black coat with a fur hood. That’s right – it had to be black and it had to have a fur hood. That was the style he liked. It was actually quite quiet so I was happy to look for something in our van that fit this description.
Turns out it was impossible. I spent the entire distribution swapping coats back and forth and coming up with alternatives for him, but none of them fit the bill. At the end of the day he left with a coat that was neither black nor had a fur hood because we had run out of options. All I could do was hope he was satisfied with it.
Then the next day a volunteer showed me this photo they took of him right after our distribution had finished. He was grinning widely from ear to ear, happy as ever in his new outfit, even though the coat I’d given him was bright blue and completely fur-free.
I cracked up looking at it and still laugh every time I remember this. He was so cheeky during our distribution, pestering me nonstop for the black coat – when in the end he was super happy with this one! At the end of the day I guess warmth is the most important thing.
