Model Motion

‘This (Branch/Region/Conference) Condemns the demonisation and racism against people fleeing persecution to claim protection in the UK. It supports the TUC and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) call for countries to uphold their obligations under the1951 UN Geneva Convention.

The lack of safe routes to claim asylum in the UK has resulted in people risking their lives to claim sanctuary in the UK, and hundreds of tragic and preventable deaths in our Channel. We believe the current Government policy increases the risk of people facing exploitation, poverty and detention. We call on the Government to provide safe routes for people seeking asylum and to treat them with dignity and respect.

This (Branch/Region/Conference) applauds the solidarity work undertaken by Care4Calais, who provide essential aid and support for refugees in northern France and the UK, and instructs the (Branch Committee/Regions Council/National Executive Committee) to:

1. Affiliate with Care4Calais.
2. Invite a speaker from Care4Calais to a Branch meeting.
3. Encourage members to donate clothing and other essential items to Care4Calais and volunteer at a local Care4Calais group; and
4. Organise a solidarity delegation to France with Care4Calais to provide practical support and gain a better understanding of the realities facing people fleeing persecution and attempting to find refuge in the UK.’

Organise a delegation to Calais

As a charity reliant on volunteers, your support means everything.

Come and join us at the grassroots, learn about the situation first-hand and make a direct impact. You can visit for 1 day, a weekend, or longer.

Fundraise and collect donations

We depend on donations to continue providing essential support to refugees in northern France and the UK. Warm clothes and shoes for men, women and children are needed. Perhaps your branch can organise a donation drive or a cash collection to enable us to directly help people where it is needed most?

Regional meetings and community events

We are always happy to join your meetings, events and conferences. Whenever possible, we will invite volunteers and people with lived experience of claiming asylum to speak and contribute.

Local outreach

Across the UK we collect and distribute clothes and other essential items, as well as providing social support and interaction – including language lessons, sport and music workshops. We also help with vital access to legal, medical and educational services. Perhaps you can spare some time to volunteer with your local Care4Calais group?
